High: 48 Low: 37 Here are the top five stories today in Beaverton: The Washington County Sheriff's office is looking for the person who set a car on fire in a Fred Meyer parking lot on Sunday. The identity of the arsonist who set the fire at 7700 SW Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway is unknown. Multiple 911 calls were received around 8 p.m. as onlookers reported the car was burning in the parking lot. (KGW) The Oregon Rental Assistance portal will close on Monday, March 14. If you have fallen behind on your rent and you haven't yet applied for assistance the state encourages you to take this week and get that application filled out. If you have previously applied and just haven't heard yet, the closure of the portal will not affect your application. (KOIN) There's a lot of road work being done right now. Several streets will be closed entirely through the night. Those streets include full closure of northbound Scholls Ferry beginning Monday and that closure will last one week. Upcoming is a full nighttime closure of Scholls Ferry from Hall Boulevard to 217. (Twitter) The City of Beaverton is expanding in-person services along with changing mask requirements. Masks will no longer be required in city offices after March 12. The city will continue to offer remote services for community members who prefer it. The city advises checking with the individual departments for their specific hours for services and operations. (City of Beaverton) With the arrival of Spring weather much of the countryside begins changing. Mike Warner of KATU news recorded this sound of frogs croaking as mating season begins out in Hillsboro and posted it on Twitter. These guys are not fooling around. Today in Beaverton: The Beaverton Library hosts shrinky-dink craft time at the downtown location for those in grades K-5. Registration required. (4 p.m. - 5 p.m.)Boly Welch is offering a free job search class online at noon to 1 p.m. today. Two job search experts will offer their best practices. They say that by the end of the hour you will know everything you need to get a job without hating the process. Although the event is free you have to sign up ahead for tickets. If you're looking for a way to celebrate International Women's Day you can't go wrong by attending the female a cappella quintet from Zimbabwe, Nobuntu at The Reser. Tickets range from $25 to $45. The group has drawn international acclaim for their performances. The show runs from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. From my notebook: On the neighbor app Nextdoor, a Tigard neighbor reminds us that as Spring approaches, birds begin their ancient migratory patterns. Hummingbirds who haven't spent the winter here will be arriving in this, the second week of March. Light pollution is the single biggest issue for birds and she reminds us to turn off lights outdoors at night. The Audubon Society can tell you more about it. Check out their Lights Out program. The City of Hillsboro invites everyone to turn out for their fire relief benefit for victims of the Weil Arcade fire. The event will be held March 12 at the Walters Cultural Center. There will be music and dessert. 100% of the proceeds will go to those affected by the fire. (Facebook) The City of Beaverton has issued a call for artists and performers who would like to be part of the opening celebrations of the updated City Park Fountain. They ask that, if you would like to be a part of it, you submit a letter of interest and your qualifications.
