LIVERMORE, CA — Tri-Valley law enforcement officers are teaming up to fundraise for Special Olympics Northern California athletes. California Highway Patrol Dublin and Livermore police officers will be meeting at the Livermore Police Department at 8:30 a.m. Monday to begin the Special Olympics Northern California Law Enforcement Torch Run, which draws about 110,000 officers each year to carry the "Flame of Hope" torch in the name of celebrating diversity, according to the Special Olympics website. The annual event has raised $18 million since it began in 1996. "The athletes are very brave and they encourage and inspire me personally," said CHP Dublin Commander Cpt. Chris Sherry in an email. "This is the type of community engagement partnership that I am very proud to be a part of." Runners will head north on S. Livermore Avenue, left on First Street, right on E. Stanley Boulevard, left on Railroad Avenue/Stanley Boulevard and end in the Nob Hill parking lot. Donors who contribute $125 can sponsor an athlete to participate in one sport season, according to CHP. The organization said it serves some 26,000 athletes, and works with more than 600 schools and nearly 137,000 students. Donate here.
