A National Geographic Explorer in Residence since 1998, former Chief Scientist for NOAA, Time Magazine’s first Hero for the Planet, and a Library of Congress Living Legend, Earle founded Deep Ocean Exploration and Research to develop submersible technologies and the nonprofit Mission Blue to develop a global network of over 140 “Hope Spots” and marine protected areas. Earle has authored a half dozen books and over 200 publications, lectured in over 80 countries, and led over 100 marine expeditions. A trailblazer in the use of modern SCUBA gear and the development of deep-sea submersibles, Earle also held the world record for the deepest untethered dive.
