SALEM, MA — The North Shore Cancer WALK is shipping out of Salem after more than three decades. Salem Hospital on Monday said the WALK is joining forces with the Mass General Hospital's Everyday Amazing Race, which takes place at the Esplanade in Boston. The Everyday Amazing Race focuses on supporting all of Mass General's cancer centers, including the Mass General/North Shore Cancer Center in Danvers. The North Shore Cancer WALK raised funds specifically for the cancer programs at Salem Hospital and the Danvers facility, which opened in 2009. "In light of our partnership with the Mass General Cancer Center and our shared commitment to this community, it makes sense to combine our fundraising efforts for greater impact," Salem Hospital Senior Vice President of Development Sara Andrews said. "While we are sad to see the North Shore Cancer WALK move out of Salem, we are excited about this opportunity to reach even more supporters of exceptional care." Since 1990, the WALK has raised more than $24 million for new facilities, equipment, pioneering clinical trials and a host of wellness services for oncology patients. Annual WALKers are encouraged to join Team North Shore on Sept. 18 for the Everyday Amazing Race. The event includes a 5K Run and a 5K WALK. Funds raised and provided by North Shore WALKers and sponsors will continue to benefit the Mass General/North Shore Cancer Center in Danvers as well as regional programs focused on cancer care and research. Registration for the Everyday Amazing Race will open in April. (Scott Souza is a Patch field editor covering Beverly, Danvers, Marblehead, Peabody, Salem and Swampscott.
