HUNTINGTON STATION, NY — A man was arrested and charged with DWI under Leandra's Law after he got into a crash in Huntington Station with his son in the car on Sunday, Suffolk police said.
Denis Manzaneras-Orellana, 34, of Huntington Station, was driving a 2000 Honda sedan on East 10th Street, between Varney and Mulford avenues, when he crashed the sedan into an unoccupied parked car around 9:20 p.m., police said. Manzaneras-Orellana's 12-year-old son was a passenger in the Honda, police said.
Manzaneras-Orellana was intoxicated, police said. He was arrested. Neither he nor his son was injured.
Manzaneras-Orellana was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated with a child passenger 15 years old or younger (Leandra's Law) and endangering the welfare of a child. The 12-year-old was released to a family member.
Manzaneras-Orellana was held overnight at the Second Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Monday.
Leandra's Law is named after 11-year-old Leandra Rosado, who was killed in an alleged drunk driving accident in 2009. It makes it a felony for first time offender who drives with a Blood Alcohol Level over .08 % with someone under the age of 15 in the car.
