Press release from Gateway Community College: March 4, 2022 Gateway Community College (GCC) has joined forces with the CT Statewide Healthcare Industry Pathway (CT SHIP) grant, which aims to "address the skill development needs of employers and to support workers in gaining skills and transitioning quickly from unemployment to employment. The grant [will also support] community colleges to address challenges associated with the pandemic, such as expanding online and technology-enabled learning." Along with Housatonic, Middlesex, Tunxis, and Norwalk Community College—the lead institution for the $6.9 million project, GCC team members, Erika Lynch, Director of Workforce Development & Continuing Education and Kate Jackson, Accountant are directing and managing the grant for the benefit of the Medical Office Assistant, Central Sterile Processing Technician, Surgical Technology Degree, Certified Nursing Assistant and Patient Care Technician programs at Gateway Community College. The grant is part of the U.S. Department of Labor (USDOL) Employment and Training Administration (ETA) which has awarded $40 million to 11 colleges nationwide. The CT SHIP program will be led by Project Director, Doreen Forbes-Rogers, and Grant Compliance Assistant, Theresa Pilch, from NCC. "The total cost of CT SHIP is $6.9M. $3.4M (49%) is funded through a U.S. Department of Labor – Employment and Training Administration grant and another $3.5M (51%) is committed through non-federal state and local resources," said Forbes-Rogers. During the project period, which runs from February 1, 2021 through January 31, 2025, CT SHIP is expected to train approximately 2,200 students over nine healthcare programs.
