Westfield High School Announces National Merit Scholar Finalists

WESTFIELD, NJ — Two Westfield High School seniors have advanced as finalists in the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Program. 12th graders Gillian Strout and Yuchen Yang are the two finalists, having met academic and other standards to become eligible for scholarships. The program selects 7,500 Merit Scholarship winners from a group of more than 15,000 finalists. National Merit Scholars will be announced over the next few months. Students qualify for a Merit Scholarship by achieving a high PSAT score, writing a strong application, scoring high on the SAT, having a strong academic transcript, submitting a letter of recommendation and writing a personal essay. According to the National Merit website, the goals of the program are to identify and honor academically talented U.S. high school students, stimulate increased support for their education, as well as provide efficient and effective program management for organizations who wish to sponsor college undergraduate scholarships.
