EAST HAVEN, CT — An elementary school age child is responsible for the Monday morning bomb threat made to the East Haven Academy, East Haven police Capt. Joseph M. Murgo said. But he said the child cannot be charged under state law. Murgo said East Haven Public Schools Superintendent Erica Forti was "made aware of our findings and will handle the issue internally." Though police said early on that they did not believe the threat was credible, both East Haven Academy and Joseph Melillo Middle School "were evacuated as a precaution." Murgo told Patch earlier Monday that the Connecticut State Police bomb squad arrived to "assist in a sweep of both buildings." By early Monday afternoon, he said that state police found no devices and students and staff were returned to school. For a period of time, police had asked that people to avoid the area of North High and Hudson streets. At around 1:30 p.m., several hours after the incident was first reported, Murgo said police are investigating the threat. In a message to families, East Haven Public Schools had noted that both police and fire departments had responded and that the schools followed "district crisis plan" protocol and all students and staff were evacuated to the hockey rink.
