Hello, neighbors! It's me again, Jeri Karges, your host of the Sacramento Daily. First, today's weather: Mostly sunny. High: 72 Low: 38. Here are the top stories today in Sacramento: A Sacramento-area woman was stuck inside a burning car on Interstate 80 earlier this week, until a good Samaritan stepped in to help. Kristine Smith says she, her husband and their granddaughter were driving on I-80 near the Riverside exit Wednesday night when something went wrong. The car hit something that caused it to burst into flames. Having just had knee surgery, Smith struggled to get out of the burning car. But then, Elton Ward came into the picture. Ward was driving with his daughter on I-80 and knew he had to pull over. Ward says he grabbed Smith out of the burning car just in time. Ward said Sacramento Metro Fire got to the scene a few minutes later to put out the fire. Smith and Ward said they now share a strong bond, and they plan to stay in touch. No one was injured in the car fire. (KCRA3)For the second Sunday in a row, thousands of people gathered at the California State Capitol in support of Ukraine. Dozens of community leaders and lawmakers across party lines were in attendance. Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg said his city will "welcome any Ukrainian who needs refuge in our community." (KCRA3)Sidewalks, alleys, parks and trails throughout the city will become cleaner, greener and more beautiful with a $16 million boost from new Clean California grants announced by Gov. Gavin Newsom this week. The five approved projects chosen for the Caltrans grants include alley cleanup and beautification in North Sacramento's Dixieanne neighborhood; art installations and new public spaces along Florin Road; funding for public art along the planned Del Rio Trail; improvements to the Robert Matsui Park along the Sacramento River; and new sidewalks, shade trees and other amenities that will make it easier and safer to walk for students at Ethel Phillips Elementary School. (Sacramento City Express) California law enforcement officials say the gunman who killed his three daughters, a chaperone who was supervising his visit with the children and himself in a church was armed with an unregistered "ghost gun." He had an illegal 30-round ammunition magazine and 17 bullets were fired Monday inside a Sacramento church. Mora was under a restraining order that barred him from possessing a firearm and authorities do not know how or when he obtained it. (KOLO8)Two were injured in a shooting in Carmichael, said the Sacramento Sheriff's Office. It began with an argument that occurred around 9 p.m. outside a house on Compton Pac Lane. The two were taken to the hospital with minor injuries, one with a gunshot wound to the arm. (7:00 PM) From my notebook: We've had some nice, bright, sunny days this year to warm your bones, but here's a story to warm your heart. Max was a stray at the Sacramento SPCA, "itching" to find his forever home. He had a series of problems, including some allergies that made him itch "ALL NIGHT." But all of that has been taken care of and you can see his gratitude for his new human in these adorable pics. (Comstock's Magazine)Planting the right tree in the right location helps promote fire safety, natural gas safety, reduces power outages and ensures beauty for years to come. That's why each year, Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) likes to recognize and honor trees during California Arbor Week. PG&E has many online materials, including free downloadable guides, with easy tips, charts and photos that help explain how, what, and where to plant the safest trees for each area, located at pge.com/RightTreeRightPlace. It's never too early to learn about trees and powerline safety, so PG&E also has fun and educational games, puzzles, and checklists just for kids at pge.com/arborday4kids. Each activity is grade and age appropriate. More from our sponsors — thanks for supporting local news! Events: Soroptimist Martinis & Merriment (March 19) Add your event Loving the Sacramento Daily?
