FOR IMMEDIATE PRESS RELEASE Naperville, February 24, 2021 KLA Schools of Naperville and Plainfield recently held their Annual STEM Fair for enrolled families. The STEM Fair highlighted several experiments children completed at school and at home and offered an opportunity for the children, teachers, and families to share their projects with each other through a virtual presentation. Ahead of the STEM Fair, the schools provided various challenges for families to try at home and send in photos of their experiences to be included in the presentation. Parent Whitney Jones said, “Great memories were made with his father in building the birdhouse together. During the project we talked about the basics of construction, built vocabulary, extended his tool identification, hand-eye coordination, patience, and teamwork. This project really encouraged us as a family to build future structures together!” At school, the youngest children participated in STEM projects related to color, including “Reflecting Rainbows” with CDs and mini lamps, “Snow Volcano” with primary-colored food coloring, and “Color Changing Flowers” with white carnations in vases of colored water. “The reason we chose to focus on colors is that my class loves colors, the color wheel, and singing the color song,” explained teacher Briana McWaine. Two-year-old children were immersed in early physics concepts with STEM projects including “Toy Roll” to roll various objects down a ramp to discover which rolled fast or slowly, and which angle of ramp made objects roll the farthest, and “Self-Propelling Aircraft,” making helicopters with various items the children brought in from home. Kindergarten learned the scientific method with a project called “Pendulum Art” which incorporated the three methods of movement, gravity, friction, and inertia. A STEM project called “Heartbeats and Stethoscopes” allowed a class of three-year-old children to work together to make homemade stethoscopes with paper towel tubes and different sizes of funnels to determine which size funnel made the best sound. “The children discovered stethoscopes in the dramatic play area and immediately wanted to know what they were. This led to a discussion about our hearts. Running and jumping makes our heart go faster, and mindfulness makes our heart slow down,” explained Meghan Zeller, Pedagogical Coordinator. Another three-year-old class re-created natural phenomena, like snowstorms and lava, in jars. Four-and-five-year-old children dived into chemical reactions with a project called “Growing Gummy Bears” to compare how different types of liquids changed the size of gummy bears, and “Soda and Mentos” where the experimental variables were different soda products. KLA Schools believes that parents are partners in a child’s development. “It is always exciting for children when their parents are involved in learning experiences,” said Selvei Rajkumar, owner of KLA Schools of Naperville, Plainfield, and Naperville West. KLA has open enrollment right now and is offering personalized virtual and in-person Saturday visits by appointment. Please contact Carrie Hemmer, our admissions director, to schedule a visit.
