High: 57 Low 33 Here are the top five stories in Beaverton today: A townhouse fire struck in the early hours of Sunday morning in an unincorporated area of Washington County. Washington County Sheriff's office and Hillsboro Fire and Rescue were first on the scene and determined the fire was on the second floor. Two occupants jumped out of a window to escape heavy smoke. Their injuries were not life threatening but they were taken by ambulance to the hospital. The cause of the fire is under investigation. (Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue)Look who are on top of their game: The Beaverton girls basketball team is leading the pack as it has made it to the state quarterfinals. The quarterfinals will be played on March 10 with the finals being played on March 12 at the Chile's Center. (OregonLive)Good news for Aloha residents who are looking for grocery alternatives. Local grocery store, Basics Market, is coming soon to the area. It is taking over the old Bales Thriftway location on Farmington Road. The space has been vacant since 2019. (Twitter)Meet your Ukrainian neighbors living in Cedar Mill. Andriy Kot and his wife, Khrystyna Porsea, have lived in Cedar Mill for three years. They are worried about their relatives still living in the country being attacked right now by Russia. Though their relatives are not currently in the areas being shelled, the Kots worry about what the future holds. (Cedar Mill News) Tired of being undervalued and unable to address their workplace complaints effectively, Starbucks employees staged a pro-union rally at the Garden Home location. They were encouraged by the recent efforts to unionize in Buffalo, New York. Seven stores in the Portland-Beaverton area participated. (KOIN) Today in Beaverton: The Beaverton library has a class for kids from 2 to 8 years of age today called Messy Art in a Bag. The focus is the exploration of colors. The class is held at the main library on Fifth Street in person from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Pre-registration required. For the musical among us the Beaverton Library will hold a virtual song circle at 6 p.m. this evening. The intention is for the group to play and sing 9 - 10 songs. Lyrics and chords will be provided. The Central Beaverton Neighborhood Association meets tonight at 7 p.m. The meeting will be virtual. People who are interested in attending can either phone in or join the meeting online. From my notebook: If you're out and about in downtown Beaverton you may want to take a free public art walk to view murals, sculptures and landmarks. There is a Beaverton Art Walk map you can print out and take with you so you know what to look for and where to find it. You'll find some Beaverton landmarks listed as well. If there is an abandoned vehicle in your neighborhood and it appears to be inoperable, the Beaverton Police encourage you to report it. They would like you to get the license plate number if available, the make, model and color of the vehicle as well as the street address where it is parked. You can either call the hotline at 503-350-4045 or use the online reporting form. Read a heart-felt story about a business owner whose store burnt down in Hillsboro in February of this year. Lucia Nguyen says her dress store is currently open in a temporary space thanks to the help she received from her community. A Hillsboro resident was charged with arson in connection with the fire.
