METRO DETROIT — Gas prices in metro Detroit on Monday hit $4 per gallon, setting another 2022 high, according to AAA. Metro Detroit drivers can expect to pay an average of $59 to fill a 15-gallon tank. The massive spike was seen across the country, as the national average for a gallon of gas also reached $4 per gallon, according to AAA. Prices in metro Detroit alone jumped 50 cents since last week. The state's average for a gallon of gas in Michigan was $4.06, which is slightly higher than the metro Detroit average at $4.03. But the $4.03 average in the metro region is now among the most expensive areas in the state for gas, only behind Marquette at $4.07, according to AAA. Some of the least expensive places to gas in the state include Traverse City at $3.86, Grand Rapids $3.93 and Ann Arbor $3.94, according to AAA. Federal officials warned gas prices would rise following Russia's invasion into Ukraine, as President Biden and other U.S. world allies placed sanctions on Russia. The sanctions reduced Russia's oil production in the world market, and mixed in with an increasing demand, oil prices rose. Crude oil prices increased by $7.19 to a price of $110.60 on Wednesday, which is the highest settlement price since May 2011, according to AAA. As the war continues in Eastern Europe, drivers can expect higher gas prices as the oil market fluctuates with uncertainty.
