Woman, 84, Killed In Glenview House Fire

GLENVIEW, IL — An 84-year-old Glenview woman died during a house fire Friday night in the 0-100 block of Elm Street. The Glenview Fire Department arrived at the scene at around 10:19 p.m. and found the woman unresponsive on a bedroom floor. After moving the woman outside and following unsuccessful CPR attempts, she was transported to Lutheran General Hospital. The woman has been identified as Joanne Strickland, of Glenview, by the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. Firefighters were called to the scene after receiving a call that smoke was coming from the roof of the home. On arrival, crews were informed by neighbors that the residence was occupied and found smoke coming from the chimney and the eaves around the exterior of the house. Fire companies were required to force entry into the home, where they encountered heavy smoke conditions. As the woman was being attended to, fire companies continued to attack the fire which was in the basement, first floor and into the attic. The cause of the fire is still under investigation with assistance from the Illinois State Fire Marshal's Office. The family dog also succumbed to the fire and smoke conditions. There were no other injuries reported. The Glenview Fire Department was assisted by the Morton Grove, Niles and Skokie fire companies. The woman's identity has not been released nor has the cause of death from the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. The cause of the fire is still under investigation with assistance from the Illinois State Fire Marshal's Office.
