Glen Ellyn Gets $14.4M Grant For New Train Station, Tunnel

GLEN ELLYN, IL — The holidays came a little early for the Village of Glen Ellyn. Village officials recently announced that they received a $14.4 million federal grant to build a new train station and pedestrian tunnel downtown. The grant was allocated by the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) via its Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) Improvement program. The total price tag for the train station and pedestrian underpass project is estimated at $20 million. In a statement, Glen Ellyn Village President Diane McGinley said, "As the second busiest stop on the Union Pacific West line, we realize that the Glen Ellyn train station is a vital connection for our residents, businesses and visitors. The new train station and pedestrian underpass will significantly improve capacity, safety and accessibility, which will only further sustain the vitality of our downtown and the overall community." The project will create a pedestrian underpass to help improve the safety and speed of foot traffic downtown. It will also increase ADA accessibility throughout the current train station by adding places for ADA pickup and dropoff, accessible ramps and bathrooms, and wider sidewalks. The money will also be used to add 108 bicycle parking spots to the existing 92 onsite.
