GLENDALE HEIGHTS, IL — Gunshot wounds killed a 46-year-old man and 4-year-old boy who were found dead after an explosion and fire in Glendale Heights, according to the DuPage County Coroner's Office. Shafath Khan, 46, and Salman Khan, 4, both sustained fatal gunshot wounds to the head, the coroner's office confirmed Thursday. They were found dead after an Aug. 24 fire in the 100 block of Dunteman Drive in the Waters Edge Condominiums complex. According to Glendale Heights police, officers were called to the scene just after 10 a.m. and saw an explosion and fire coming from a second-floor unit. Police officers Bradley Lautner, Grzegorz Kapusciak and Robin Lambert went into the building and rescued a 6-year-old child from the same second-floor unit the victims were in and helped other residents evacuate safely. Due to extreme heat and fire, the officers were unable to re-enter the unit. 2 Dead, 5 Injured After Fire In Glendale Heights: Police The 6-year-old was taken to a hospital, treated and released the same day. Police say no other residents were injured. The three officers were also treated at a nearby hospital for minor injuries and released the same day. A firefighter was also injured, according to a previous press release. The investigation into the victims' deaths and the cause of the explosion and fire is ongoing. "This was an isolated incident and there are no concerns for the ongoing safety of the public," Glendale Heights Police Department Deputy Chief Brandon Oliver told Patch, but would provide no further comment on the incident at press time.
