Tour the first U.S. military post in Puget Sound and see how the inhabitants of this fort once lived Fort Steilacoom is a history museum where guests of all ages can explore military life of enlisted soldiers, officers, the families of soldiers, civilians that worked for the garrison and those that visited from the community. The fort has four buildings. Families pay up to $10 to tour. We keep that price reasonable as we encourage people to take this tour to get the full experience. However, you are more than welcome to tour our interpretive center for free. This Eventbrite event is for those free tickets for just the interpretive center. We encourage you to take this free tour if your time is limited, or if you're a volunteer or other interested person who would just like to chat with our volunteers on duty. From the U.S. Army’s arrival in 1849 until its departure in 1868, many soldiers and civilians brought the post to life with their daily tasks and calls to duty. As you tour the museum’s buildings, museum interpreters will help you connect with those that came before us and their everyday lives Because of the pandemic, there have had to be some changes in our normal visiting practices. Museum capacity will be limited. We require you to reserve a ticket for each person, even if admission for them is free. Printed copies of your tickets are not needed. We invite you to arrive five minutes before your reservation. All visitors and staff are expected to maintain a distance of at least six feet from others to comply with social distancing guidelines. As of this writing, masks should be worn by people inside the buildings but do not have to be worn outside. Because of the changing nature of the pandemic, visiting requirements may change.
