Description

A hybrid panel discussion on the future direction of public health Please join us in welcoming Pulitzer Prize-winning writer and 2022 Yale Poynter Fellow Ed Yong to the Yale School of Public Health for a very special event on April 8. Mr. Yong will be leading a discussion on the future direction of public health with three national leaders in the field – Dr. Amy Fairchild, Dean of the Ohio State University College of Public Health, Dr. Michelle Williams, Dean of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, and Dr. Sten Vermund, Dean of the Yale School of Public Health. Entitled “Does Public Health Need a Reboot?,” this discussion will center on the challenges facing public health raised by Mr. Yong in his article How Public Health Took Part in Its Own Downfall published on Oct. 23, 2021 in The Atlantic. In the article, Mr. Yong describes public health as a field that has lost its momentum as a driver of important social reforms that in past years led to improved sanitation, safer working conditions, and better housing. Through extensive research and interviews, Mr. Yong lays forth a compelling argument that it is time for public health leaders to reclaim their political voice, stand by their science, and advocate for the social reforms that are necessary to improve public health and address the significant inequities that exist today. And so, we ask, “Does Public Health Need a Reboot?” Please join us for this important and timely conversation. This is a hybrid event. You can register for in-person or Zoom attendance. This event is sponsored by the Yale School of Public Health with support from Yale’s Poynter Fellowship in Journalism program and the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health (ASPPH).
