174 Saddleback Valley Employees Laid Off Due To Remote Learning

LAKE FOREST, CA — Saddleback Valley Unified School District notified 174 employees of potential layoffs, Sunday. Layoffs, according to district Assistant Superintendent Connie Cavanaugh, would take effect Oct. 20, should in person instruction not resume. "These are super cautionary layoffs in case we can't return to classroom instruction," Cavanaugh told the OC Register in a recent report. "Our goal is that if and when we know what a return to school looks like, we can rescind those notices." Those laid off include campus supervisors, playground assistants, and other staff whose jobs are made obsolete by distance learning. Capistrano Unified School District recently pink-slipped 170 classified employees. Los Alamitos Unified School District also made similar moves. According to Orange County CEO Frank Kim, if the county remains on target with the current reduction in coronavirus case counts, many schools may reopen for on campus learning by Sept. 9.
