Description
Training on some of the most pressing mental health concerns among college athletes. Coaches, parents, athletes and trainers welcome. AGENDA 1:00-1:50 pm - Welcome/Building Mental Health Bridges will examine strategies for coaches and athletic departments to provide engaging avenues for student-athletes to enhance their mental health and wellness. 2:00-2:50 pm - Mood & Personality Disorders will explore high profile cases in which mental illness symptoms were observed or evident but therapeutic treatment was not sought, recommended, or delayed and the potentially resulting outcomes. 3:00-3:50 pm - Trauma & Trauma Informed Care will explore ACE's, biological implications of trauma, trauma & Black athletes and how coaches/athletic departments can begin to develop a trauma informed care model for athletes. PRESENTERS Emmet L. Gill, Jr., PhD, MSW, LMSW - Emmett Gill is the CCSSWI founder and former professional sports crisis and wellness manager where his work focused on mental health crisis planning for the National Football League (NFL) and training National Basketball Association (NBA) staff on mental health and wellness. Dr. Gill is also the former Director of Student-Athlete Wellness & Personal Development at the University of Texas at Austin and North Carolina Central University (NCCU). Emmett is also the co-founder of the Alliance of Social Workers in Sports (ASWIS). Emmett is the proud husband of Bridget (Jackson) and father of Dante, Simone, Anton, Nathan, E’Lan and Blaze (the family dog). Tiffanie Victoria Jones, PhD, LMSW – Dr. Jones is a New Orleans native, who earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mass Communication from Dillard University in her hometown, an MSW degree from the University of Missouri at Columbia, and a PhD degree in social work from Howard University in Washington, DC. Dr. Jones, an extensively trained research methodologist, currently teaches as a clinical assistant professor at Tulane University School of Social Work (TSSW) in the research sequence of the Master’s program. Her research agenda centers primarily on mental health in special and vulnerable populations. She has conducted research on high collision athletes who are at high risk of developing dementia-related illnesses from repeated traumatic head injuries, namely concussions. Dr. Jones is a member of CCSSWI and North American Christians in Social Work; she is the founder of CiL Research Consulting Group; and she is a proud Make-A-Wish volunteer.
