Description

Limited to 12 participants Day 1: Interactive and educational talk, role play and fun Day 2: Hands-on coaching for you and your dog Walk your dog, they say; it's gonna be fun, they say! Right? And it's all fun and games until Bolt charges out the door, Buster drags you down the road, Cujo sees another dog and Buddy runs off in pursuit of something only a dog would understand. And where does that leave you? Few dog-related activities can be as frustrating or anxiety-inducing as walking a dog. And to gain at least some control, you have tried everything from useless gadgets to treats ... then higher value treats, then highest value treats. You have joined countless dog training groups on social media, you have gone through stacks of "how to walk your dog" books, and your head is spinning from the inevitable flood of well-intentioned and sometimes contradicting advice you get from others. And seeing perfect pooch across the field doesn't do anything to help your mood - though, it may actually make you dream of better times. Whether you are a canine professional, a rescue worker or a dog owner for whom this rings true, we would like to introduce you to Affective Dog Behavior, an educational program that specializes in the canine emotional brain. Affective Dog Behavior recognizes the importance of relationships vs. "sit and stay" training. In this two-day workshop, we will teach you how to "take the living room outside" so that the dog at the end of the leash will look for you rather than the rest of the stimulating environment. By the end of Day 1, you will not only understand some important basics about canine emotions and how emotions affect your dog's behaviors, through role play with other participants (sorry, no dogs on day 1) you will learn how to recognize and help meet your dog's needs to help them feel safe in THEIR way. On Day 2, we want you to bring your dog so that we can show you how to apply this new knowledge in the real world. The workshop is limited to only 12 participants. Day 1 - June 11, 2022: The whole group will meet at the Hidden Grove Pavilion at Sugar Houe Park in Salt Lake City at 9:30 am; we do not encourage you to bring any dogs, since this day is reserved for discussions and role play. Day 2 - June 12, 2022: The group will be divided into smaller groups of no more than four (4) human-dog pairs. The times to meet will be determined during the course of Day 1. Your coaches are Alyssa Giles and Diana Kastner: In 2008, Alyssa graduated with her Bachelor's Degree in Psychology, focusing on Applied Behavior Analysis. She began dog training with the philosophy to create a positive experience for both dog and human. When she became a mom in 2012, her perspective on what was best for dogs was evolving. Her curiosity about canine emotions finally prompted her to join the Affective Dog Behavior team. Alyssa resides in northern Utah, where she strives to help dog owners resolve conflict by connecting with their dogs and meeting their social-emotional needs. Diana was born and raised in Germany but has made her home in the US for the past 29 years. Though, working with dogs is not her primary occupation, she has been involved in rescue work for a number of years and has recently earned two diplomas - one in "Force free canine coaching" and another in "Rescue dog cognition and rehabilitation" through Canine Principles. Not only is Diana actively involved in all aspects of Affective Dog Behavior, but, through her affiliation with ADB, she has also turned into somewhat of an Affective Neuroscience geek. Diana resides in Colorado and will be flying into Salt Lake City to assist Alyssa with this workshop.
