GENEVA, IL — The Northern Illinois Food Bank is looking for volunteers to support its Hunger Action Month Service Day on Friday. The Geneva-based organization, which provides food to about 900 pantries, soup kitchens and shelters in 13 Illinois counties, is hosting six volunteer events Friday for its annual 9/11 Service Day. Coronavirus Increases Hunger: Find A Food Bank In Kane County Volunteers are needed at "Pack-A-Thon" food-packing events, which will run from 8-10 a.m., 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 1:30-3:30 p.m. at the Northern Illinois Food Bank's centers in Geneva, Joliet and Park City. The organization's Rockford location will also host a food-packing event from 8-10 a.m. Friday, according to a news release. Coronavirus Citations: Kane County Sheriff Ready To Issue Fines The Northern Illinois Food Bank will also be hosting grocery-distribution events from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday at the Winnebago Community Market in Rockford and from 4:30-7 p.m. in the parking lot of the Northern Illinois University Nursing School in DeKalb. The organization is urging people to volunteer throughout September, which is Hunger Action Month, and beyond amid the coronavirus pandemic. Sept. 11 is a National Day of Service and Remembrance on which many Americans volunteer in their communities to pay tribute those who died in the 2001 terrorist attacks. Kane Co. Feeding America, which supports 200 food banks across the country, estimates that in 2020, more than 54 million Americans will not have enough nutritious food to eat due to the effects of the coronavirus pandemic.
