FRANKFORT, IL — The River Valley Youth Football League, which several south suburban teams take part in, has delayed its 2020 season until spring 2021, according to its website and Facebook page.
"We are all disappointed, but the health and safety of our football and cheer athletes must always come first," the league board said on its website.
The delay comes after Gov. J.B. Pritzker announced new guidelines and restrictions for youth and adult recreational sports. The new guidance will go into effect on Aug. 15.
Sports have been broken down by risk level and an associated level of play which allows for different levels of competition. Football is considered a higher risk sport which means it can play at level 1, which only allows for no-contact practices and training.
Several south suburban football leagues participate in the River Valley league, including teams from Homer Glen, Orland Park, Frankfort Square, Morris, Frankfort, Tinley Park and New Lenox.
