Press release from the Frankfort Police Department:
July 19, 2020
The Frankfort Police Department has received several reports regarding an unemployment benefits scam. The scam involves victims receiving a debit card for unemployment benefits, although they have not filed an unemployment claim or requested a card.
The debit cards bear the Illinois State Insignia and are used to load unemployment benefit payments after a claim has been approved. If you or a family member receive a letter and a debt card from the Illinois Department of Employment Security please contact the Frankfort Police Department as you may be the target of fraud.
Also, we encourage those who receive the unsolicited mail and debit card to contact the Illinois Department of Employment Security, the agency that oversees the unemployment compensation program, at 800-814-0513. Please share this information with friends and family to create awareness.
