“Dictate vs Choice. So in Florida Republicans now have their “Don’t Say Gay” bill, in Texas they are persecuting the families of transgender kids, in Virginia they’re refusing to teach Black history in schools, and in Washington County, Wisconsin they are banning the art of four 13-16-year-olds for “the LGBTQ+ and inclusivity nature of the mural design.” What does this have to do with Putin invading Ukraine? Everything. Once you believe it is your right to exclude others based on things beyond their control, you’ve lost your humanity. Once you decide you get to dictate the lives of others, you become the dictator. And no, just as people objecting to racism aren’t the real racists, people objecting to the cruelty you choose to direct at those outside the majority aren’t the real dictators. Each of us has the ability to accept the goodness in people not exactly like ourselves and support their lives, and their liberty, and their pursuit of their happiness.
