Did you know that in Los Angeles City, 75% of residential land is zoned for single detached houses only, meaning that apartment homes are banned in most of our residential neighborhoods? But this hasn’t always been the case. Apartments of all kinds existed throughout Los Angeles, and have been part of our urban fabric since LA’s early days. Forbidden City introduces the audience to several classic Los Angeles apartment types, from lovely bungalow courts to glamorous art deco style apartments. All of them once belonged to our cityscape; today they are a rarity, banished from most of our neighborhoods. By attending this tour, you will learn about LA’s housing history and policy, and gain a foundational understanding of how we arrived at the Housing Crisis today and where we can go from here.
