EVERGREEN PARK, IL – The Queen of Martyrs Wildcats returned to school on Monday. For most of them, they hadn't been in their school building since March, when schools were closed to slow the spread of coronavirus. While it was the type of "back to school" nobody ever imagined, brand-new principal and former long-time Brother Rice High School administrator Jacob "Doc" Matthias guided the Queen of Martyrs kids and staff through a safe, albeit strange, return to the classroom. Doc, along with Queen of Martyrs teachers, were all on hand to welcome the kids backc to school, but not before getting a temperature check and a squirt of hand sanitizer before they were allowed to walk through the door. "It's been a huge undertaking, but it takes a village," Mathius said. "My office staff and teachers have been instrumental in us getting things ready for the kids." Instituting several new procedures including (but not limited to) grade specific entryways, socially distanced desk placement and intense cleaning procedures, the students of Queen of Martyrs were welcomed back with open arms and, since they couldn't see their teachers mouths behind their masks, smiling eyes. "The kids were excited to be back, and we're excited to have them back. There are a lot of benefits to being in the classroom and our QM kids will benefit from that greatly. It will be a challenge at times with the masks and social distancing measures, but I'm confident that the health and safety mandates instituted by the Archdiocese will help us keep everyone safe, everyone learning and everything going in the right direction." With the initial back-to-school introductory days now behind us, school is back in session. Queen of Martyrs is not currently at full student capacity so any parents who are looking for a school where their children can attend in the classroom are encouraged to schedule a tour or a meeting with Principal Mathius directly at [email protected].
