Jeep Slams Into Stopped Car On I-95 Near Groton: Police

GROTON, CT — Connecticut State Police are reminding residents about the state's Move Over Law after a Jeep slammed into a stopped car during a traffic stop on Interstate 95 near Groton. The collision happened Wednesday just after 4 p.m. when a trooper pulled over a driver for traveling 88 mph in a 65 mph zone, Connecticut State Police said in a release. The trooper was sitting in his cruiser issuing a citation to the driver for operating with a suspended license when a Jeep Wrangler narrowly missed the cruiser and struck the pulled-over vehicle, police said. Connecticut State Police posted a video of the collision to Facebook. According to police, both the cruiser and the stopped car were parked on the roadway shoulder. The cruiser had its emergency lights activated. Meanwhile, the Jeep was traveling in the right of two lanes before hitting the pulled-over car. One driver sustained minor injuries, police said. The driver of the Jeep, a 68-year-old Rhode Island man, was cited for failing to move over for an emergency vehicle, failure to maintain their lane, and driving without insurance. Connecticut's Move Over Law requires a driver traveling on a highway with at least two lanes in each direction to immediately slow down or move over one lane approaching an emergency vehicle or a vehicle stopped on the shoulder.
