Description

By Annika Hom, Mission Local March 4, 2022 The ride toward permanent protected bike lanes on Valencia Street has resumed, but its design will yield to popular pandemic parklets. Shared Spaces and parklets "have made it more challenging to install the original design," Stephen Chun, a spokesperson for the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, wrote in an email. The current design has the protected lane along the curb, but with some parklets using that space, the permanent protected lane must "weave around" the parklets. The structures mean up to two parking spaces will be removed for the parking-protected bikeway design, he added. Still, the city is "committed" to installing the bikeways this year, according to an SFMTA blog post. The pandemic derailed original plans to install them by 2021.
