Gunman In Evanston Standoff Faces Firearm Felonies: Police

EVANSTON, IL — Prosecutors approved felony charges for an Evanston man accused of firing a gun toward an acquaintance last week before barricading himself in his house. Fredrick Davis, 61, of the 1800 block of Dodge Avenue, has been charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm and unlawful use of weapon in connection with the Nov. 10 incident in front of his home. Shortly before noon, Davis had been involved in an argument with a 70-year-old Evanston man he knew, according to police. During the argument, Davis went into his house and retrieved a handgun, police determined. He came back out and fired two shots toward the other man. "Davis then returned to his residence and refused to come out when police arrived," police reported. "Thankfully no one was struck by either projectile." Fredrick Bernard Davis, 61, of Evanston, was ordered held at Cook County Jail on charges of aggravated discharge of a firearm and one count of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon by a felon until he can provide $15,000 cash to secure his release ahead of trial. (Cook County Sheriff's Office) The standoff led to the deployment of a suburban SWAT team to Evanston for the fourth time so far this year, according to city staff. All three previous deployments have been triggered by political demonstrations. Davis eventually left his house voluntarily and turned himself in to the heavily armed team of officers, police said. Two days later, Davis was booked into Cook County Jail and ordered to remain there in lieu of the $15,000 cash portion of his bail ahead of his next court appearance Thursday, according to the Cook County Sheriff's Office. He is due back in court Thursday.
