250 More Elmhurst Residents Have Coronavirus: Health Agency

ELMHURST, IL — In the last week, nearly 250 Elmhurst residents tested positive for the coronavirus, according to the DuPage County Health Department. As of Sunday, the total number of residents with the coronavirus since the pandemic's beginning rose 17 percent in the previous week, to 1,669. At the same time, the rate of increase was nearly 18 percent statewide, 13 percent in Hinsdale, 24 percent in Darien and Western Springs, and 26 percent in La Grange. Since the beginning of October, Elmhurst's total cases have risen 75 percent. The number of those who have recovered is unavailable. As of Sunday, coronavirus-related deaths in Elmhurst numbered 48 since the pandemic's beginning, the same as it was a week earlier. Nursing homes are often hotbeds for the coronavirus, but those numbers have barely budged statewide in recent months. The Grove of Elmhurst, Lexington and Artis suffered outbreaks in the first months of the pandemic, but they have since been contained. The figure compares to 27.1 in La Grange Park, 30.2 in Darien, 32.2 in Western Springs, 34.1 in Hinsdale, 34.3 in Clarendon Hills, 36.1 in DuPage County, 41.2 in suburban Cook County, 41.9 in Burr Ridge and 43.5 in La Grange (including unincorporated La Grange Highlands). As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 573,6156, up 17.5 percent from a week earlier. The coronavirus has claimed the lives of 10,742 state residents. Nationally, 10.8 million people have caught the virus, up 11 percent from the week before. A total of 244,810 people have died from the virus in the United States. On Monday, Elmhurst Hospital was treating 76 patients with confirmed cases of COVID-19, the illness caused by the coronavirus, according to the hospital. Monday's number was more than four times the level a month ago. The hospital reached a high point on April 17, when it had 72 COVID-19 patients. By early June, the number of coronavirus patients plunged to the low 30s. Soon, it was half that. On Sept. 1, it was one. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 110 people have died from the coronavirus at the facility. The number is up by a dozen from a week ago. Since March 24, 818 patients have been discharged from Elmhurst Hospital following treatment for confirmed cases of COVID-19, according to the hospital. Elmhurst Hospital's patient base covers an area far greater than Elmhurst itself.
