ELMHURST, IL — Elmhurst saw nearly 250 more coronavirus cases in the last week, passing the 2,000 mark in cases since the beginning of the pandemic, according to the DuPage County Health Department. As of Sunday, Elmhurst had seen 2,191 coronavirus cases, up by 248, or 13 percent, in the last week. That's the same percentage hike as Darien, Clarendon Hills and Western Springs. La Grange and Hinsdale experienced 10 percent increases. Since the beginning of October, Elmhurst's total cases have more than doubled. The number of those who have recovered is unavailable. As of Sunday, coronavirus-related deaths in Elmhurst since the pandemic's beginning increased by one in the last week to 51. The figure compares to 35.4 in La Grange Park, 39.6 in Darien, 41.2 in Western Springs, 41.7 in Hinsdale, 43.9 in Clarendon Hills, 47.1 in DuPage County, 50.8 in Burr Ridge, 51.5 in suburban Cook County and 55.6 in La Grange (including unincorporated La Grange Highlands). As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 720,114, up 9.7 percent from a week earlier. The coronavirus has claimed the lives of 12,193 state residents. Nationally, 13.1 million people have caught the virus, up 9.5 percent from the week before. A total of 265,166 people have died from the virus in the United States. On Monday, Elmhurst Hospital was treating 68 patients with confirmed cases of COVID-19, the illness caused by the coronavirus, according to the hospital. Monday's number was six fewer than a week ago, but nearly five times what it was in early October. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 119 people have died from the coronavirus at the facility. The number is up by seven from a week ago. Since March, 953 patients have been discharged from Elmhurst Hospital following treatment for confirmed cases of COVID-19, according to the hospital. Elmhurst Hospital's patient base covers an area far greater than Elmhurst itself.
