ELMHURST, IL — Five percent of Elmhurst's population has been infected by the coronavirus at some point since March, according to county numbers. About 2 percent of local coronavirus victims have died. That works out to a tenth of 1 percent of Elmhurst's population. As of Sunday, Elmhurst had seen 2,435 coronavirus cases, up by 244, or 11 percent, from a week earlier. That's roughly the same percentage hike as in other towns, including Hinsdale and Darien. Over the last two months, Elmhurst's total cases have increased by nearly 160 percent. The number of those who have recovered is unavailable. As of Sunday, coronavirus-related deaths in Elmhurst since the pandemic's beginning stood at 51, the same as a week before. On Monday, Elmhurst Hospital was treating 64 patients with confirmed cases of COVID-19, the illness caused by the coronavirus, according to the hospital. Monday's number was four fewer than a week ago, but was more than four times what it was in early October. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 124 people have died from the coronavirus at the facility. The number is up by five from a week ago. Since March, 999 patients have been discharged from Elmhurst Hospital following treatment for confirmed cases of COVID-19, according to the hospital. Elmhurst Hospital's patient base covers an area far greater than Elmhurst itself.
