ELMHURST, IL — This week, Elmhurst police have handled cases involving shoplifting, disturbances, a dispute, a gift card scam, drugs and a car burglary. Here is information from the latest Elmhurst police reports: Shoplifting Riley Hogan, 19, of Elmhurst, was cited about 1:30 p.m. Monday on charges of retail theft and possession of alcohol by a minor. He was released on bond. According to a police report, Hogan took two bottles of liquor and walked past the registers at CVS Pharmacy, 110 W. North Ave. An officer later found Hogan and the stolen merchandise. Two youths tried to steal liquor from Mariano's, 678 N. York St., at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. When store security confronted them, they abandoned their cart. They left the store and entered a car waiting outside. The men were described as black and 16 or 17 years old. One wore a blue hoodie, dark jeans, a large belt buckle, black shoes and a face mask, while the other wore a black hooded jacket, black gaiter-style mask, gray sweatpants and white Air Jordan gym shoes. Disturbances Police responded to a domestic disturbance about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday near Church Street and Kenilworth Avenue. A woman said another person struck her in the head three times. The other person said they were arguing and denied striking the woman. No arrests were made because of conflicting statements and no signs of injury. A woman told police that a man was loitering on her property about 8 p.m. Tuesday in the 200 block of South Pick Avenue. She confronted the man, who then lunged at her before running west on Villa Avenue. The man is presumed to be homeless and has been served a no-trespass notice for the woman's property. Dispute Police received a report Monday from a person at 255 S. West Ave., saying a suspect threw a set of keys at him in July, striking him in the chest. The incident occurred in July, and the person who was struck was advised not to report it. The suspect said there were many issues with the person who alleged the incident, leading to the person being terminated. No complaints were signed. Gift card scam A person at Jewel-Osco, 153 E. Schiller St., told police Monday that she received an email from someone claiming to be her employer. She was told to buy Apple gift cards and send the card information to a suspect. The person sent the information before realizing it was a scam. She contacted her bank and is expecting a reimbursement. Phone in wrong hands A woman accidentally left her phone in the bathroom at CVS Pharmacy, 110 W. North Ave. about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. She later called her phone and a man answering told her he would return the phone that night before hanging up. Drugs Bradley West, 34, of Palatine, was arrested about 6 p.m. Monday on charges of unlawful possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was taken to the DuPage County Jail. According to a police report, when officers were called about a person refusing to leave Courtyard by Marriott, 370 N. Route 83, they spoke with West, who was found to have an illegal drug. Car burglary A car was broken into overnight Dec. 3 in the indoor garage in the 100 block of South York Street. Nothing appeared to be missing. Driving violations Karina Gaytan, 20, of Addison, was cited about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday at Myrtle and North on charges of no valid driver's license, operating an uninsured motor vehicle and driving with one headlight. In the same stop, Jailene Medel, 21, of Addison, was cited on a charge of unlawful possession of marijuana by a passenger. They were released on bond. Jasmine Mattox, 27, of Berkeley, was cited shortly after 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Charles and Route 83 on charges of no valid driver's license, operating an uninsured motor vehicle and tinted windows. She was released on bond. Police report information is provided by local police departments. Charges are not evidence of guilt. They are a record of police actions on a given day, and persons charged with a crime are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
