Tuell, Ed.D., LPCC-S, LICDC-CS Description: Behavioral addictions, like chemical addictions, involve behaviors which become compulsive, out of control, and are continued despite the negative consequences. Sexual addiction, problem gambling, compulsive spending, along with the Internet, have introduced the addiction counseling field to this new realm of addictive behaviors and the devastating impact it has upon the client, the family, and society in general. Behavioral addictions, much like substance addictions, are the habitual drive to continue an action even to the detriment of health and happiness. This presentation will examine the latest research on the addictive brain and the ramifications it has for behavioral addictions. A review of behavioral addiction research will be discussed, along with case studies. Dr. Tuell will bring his 36 years of experience in the field of mental health and addiction to this presentation. Learning Objectives: Learn the similarities and differences between Behavioral and Chemical Addictions and the implication they have upon treatment strategies for individuals with co-occurring disorders.Become more familiar with the CUBIS Model of Addiction and the relationship between mental health and addictive behaviors.Participants will understand the key issues associated with individuals exhibiting Behavioral Addictions, including assessment and treatment strategies.Two 15-minute breaks are included. 60 minutes are provided for lunch on your own.
