ELGIN, IL — The former owner of Gee N Jays in Elgin has died at age 82 after being diagnosed with the new coronavirus, the Daily Herald reports. Gerhard "Gary" Niefnecker, who suffered from multiple health issues, died on April 28 at The Vines Senior Homes in Elgin.
He is remembered for being a "really nice man" who would give free treats to those who did not have enough money to enjoy his ice cream or burgers at the establishment he opened at 925 Dundee Avenue in the 1970s, according to the Daily Herald. He also would give free ice cream cones to kids walking home from school.
