Description
Celebrating Women's History Month! In this intimate culinary demonstration with Chef Shanita, Mixologist Matsumoto Mari, and Jamie Mac of Restless Sprits learn the elements of a perfect whiskey cocktail. Guests will sample three whiskey inspired dishes and three Restless Sprits cocktails. Take home a recipe for the perfect Old Fashion cocktail. In addition, guests are encouraged to meet Lisa Shockley, Curator of Collections, on the second floor before as she will examine a prescription for ‘medicinal’ whiskey from the Prohibition Era. The Prospect KC is a ground-breaking non-profit created by Chef Shanita McAfee-Bryant as an answer to the statistics on minority unemployment and lack of access too healthy foods. The Prospect KC provides job training for underserved men and women by developing innovative programming and partnerships designed to increase access to fresh fruits and vegetables throughout Kansas City’s urban core. They believe that we can create opportunities for growth while also addressing systemic problems like food insecurity, unemployment, housing instability, and other challenges facing communities of color today. The Prospect KC will empower individuals and communities through food-based solutions because they believe that no one should go hungry or be denied the opportunity for self-determination because of hunger. Beverage Director of Buck Tui BBQ Matsumoto Mari was born and raised in Japan, where she was inspired by her mother’s many years in the service industry. The delicate service and practice of true hospitality has been passed on to Mari, who is gifted and experienced in every restaurant position from dishwashing, cooking, serving, and tending bar to managing. She finds her true passion behind the bar, where she can exercise her creative muscle with the boundless flavors and endless possibilities while engaging actively with guests. Mari has a philosophy built on the principle of culture and cultivating a better one for hospitality workers, particularly women and minorities, with a focus on maintaining the health of the body as well as the mind and soul. Jamie “Mac” is Director of Sales for Restless Spirits Distilling Co. During her 5 years with the company, she has helped take Restless from two states into twelve, but she will tell you, “We are just getting started!” Jamie is proud to represent Restless Spirits, especially for Women History Month, as Restless Spirits has Missouri's first and only female Master Distiller. Science teacher turned Distiller, Benay Shannon, is the Co-Founder, Co-Owner, and Master Distiller at Restless Spirits Distilling Company out of Kansas City, Missouri. Prior to Restless Spirits, Benay spent 11 years teaching high school science, but unlike a popular television series, she keeps everything legal throughout her entire distilling process. She is mostly self-taught, but her palate, passion for research, and her dedication to perfection, have helped her claim numerous awards, including Missouri Distillery of the Year, every year since 2016, when Restless Spirits first opened to the public. The Museum is proud to offer intimate culinary programs in Café at 3218. Café at 3218 brings people together to enjoy a seasonal menu (coming in summer 2022) and participate in culinary programs including cooking demonstrations and classes. Café at 3218 encourages everyone to have a seat at the table, celebrating community and sharing the recipes, stories, and histories that nourish us. *2:00 to 2:15 p.m. A Whiskey History conversation with Lisa Shockley $65 per person Café at 3218 - First Floor Space is very limited, tickets required For more information, please contact Paul Gutiérrez, Director of Visitor Experience & Public Programming, at [email protected] or 816.702.7705.
