NEW YORK CITY — Verizon experienced a "large cellular outage" in multiple U.S. states Friday, according to an online outage monitor, New York City Council member and the company. Nearly 13,000 Verizon outages were reported on DownDetector.com on Friday afternoon with 87 percent affecting mobile service. New York City, Brooklyn and Queens saw among the most reported outages. By 3 p.m. ET, the number of outages had declined significantly to just under 2,800 outages. By 5:17 p.m., the number had dropped to 689. Justin Brannan, a Brooklyn City Council member, alerted constituents to the outages shortly after 2 p.m. "HEADS UP: @Verizon Wireless is experiencing a large cellular outage reportedly affecting east coast mobile device calls," Brannan said in a now-deleted tweet. "Text messages seem to be working but issues making/receiving calls." A Verizon spokesperson named Jenelle responded confirming the company was aware of the situation and promising more information. "We are starting to hear some chatter about some issues in this area," Jenelle tweeted on the official Verizon account. "We are gathering some more details. Please Follow and DM to gather some more information." Verizon reportedly also confirmed "intermittent issues" to Victor Ordoñez of ABC News in New York. "Verizon claims there are some 'intermittent issues' with making/receiving phone calls — does not elaborate on the extent of the outages," Ordoñez tweeted. Other affected cities include Boston, Jersey City, Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Nashville and Dallas, according to DownDetector.com.
