BELLMORE, NY — Plans for a residential complex in Bellmore have been met with opposition. One man, Colin Bennett, created a Change.org page for members of the community to voice their displeasure with the Town of Hempstead. The developer has sought variances from the town to build a four-story, 27-unit apartment building at 2160 Bedford Avenue. The ground floor would include retail space as well. At issue, according to Bennett, the complex would exceed the acceptable number of stories and the project would lead to population density. "We need to prevent the construction of these apartment complexes to prevent the urbanization of our beautiful town," Bennett writes. He contends that having this project go forward would upend the "quaint little village," by leading to "overcrowding" in the neighborhood. The Change.org page has received more than 650 signatures. Additionally, this issue will be part of the Town of Hempstead public hearing slated for March 23.
