SECAUCUS, NJ — The Hudson County Prosecutor's Office announced Friday morning they are seeking the public's help in locating a 21-year-old woman who is wanted in a child abuse case that left her 3-year-old daughter gravely injured. A warrant has been issued for the arrest of Shaqwana Baker. Her last known address is in the Bronx, but she recently stayed in North Bergen and Secaucus, said Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez. (The prosecutor did not say when or where she was in Secaucus; Patch has asked.) On Jan. 23, Baker brought her 3-year-old daughter to NYU Langone hospital; the toddler girl had life-threatening injuries, according to Suarez. The girl's injuries were so serious that she had to be transported to the pediatric ICU at Bellevue Hospital, where she continues to receive medical treatment as of Friday, March 4. An investigation by the NYPD and Hudson County Special Victims Unit determined the 3-year-old girl was the victim of child abuse that occurred while she was staying at a North Bergen motel with her mother and her mother's boyfriend. The child's injuries are expected to be permanent and life altering. Prosecutor Suarez did not release any further details on exactly what type of injuries the girl suffered. Baker and her boyfriend, Edward Smith, 29, of Far Rockaway, New York, are both charged with second-degree aggravated assault and two counts of child endangerment. Smith was taken into police custody last Thursday and is currently at the Hudson County Jail. Baker remains at large. Anyone with information on Baker's whereabouts is asked to contact the Special Victims Unit at 201-915-1234 or leave an anonymous tip on the Hudson County Prosecutor's official website at: https://www.hudsoncountyprosec... .
