ELMHURST, IL — A Chicago man was arrested Wednesday after he crashed his car during a police pursuit in an Elmhurst neighborhood, authorities said. Gonzalo Guerrero, 29, was arrested on a number of charges. About 1:30 p.m., an Elmhurst police officer saw a 2020 Nissan that was identified as having been stolen in a carjacking the previous day in Chicago, according to the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office. That was near St. Charles Road and Fair Avenue. Shortly after, another Elmhurst officer spotted the Nissan and followed the car near St. Charles and Cottage Hill Avenue, police said. The driver then sped away, turning south on Spring Road, according to the state's attorney. The officer turned on his emergency lights. Guerrero sped through a residential neighborhood and then struck another car, police said. The car Guerrero was in was so damaged that an officer had to break a window to remove him. During a search, officers found cocaine in Guerrero's possession, authorities said. He was taken to the hospital and then released. His bail was set at $1 million. He was charged with possession of a stolen vehicle, three counts of aggravated fleeing and eluding an officer, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, and two traffic offenses. In a statement, State's Attorney Robert Berlin said Guerrero's "lawlessness and complete disregard" for the safety of others will not be tolerated.
