ATLANTA, GA — A spate of thefts of gasoline and other items from cars in Atlanta's Eastlake neighborhood is over now that police have a suspect in custody, authorities said.
Thursday afternoon, Atlanta Police officers arrested Matthew Reznick in connection with the thefts, police said.
Investigators say the "gas bandit" used a tool to drill a hole into vehicle gas tanks, draining the gasoline inside and leaving the owner with hundreds, or even thousands of dollars in damage. Police also say the suspect broke into vehicles and stole other assorted items.
"Officers in this case were able to recognize the suspect vehicle from previous 'Be on The Look Out' (BOLOS) notifications APD investigators previously sent throughout our agency and to the public," an Atlanta Police spokesperson said in a statement. "The gas bandit has stolen his last gallon of petroleum for the week."
Reznick was charged with multiple counts of entering an automobile and criminal damage to property, as well as driving with a suspended license, police said.
He was taken to the Grady Memorial Hospital detention facility when he told officers he was having chest pains, then later taken to the Fulton County Jail, authorities said.
