DOWNERS GROVE, IL — A beloved Downers Grove sports announcer has died after a battle with coronavirus. Jim Mizener, 78, died Saturday, according to Suburban Life.
Mizener had been an announcer for Downers Grove South and North for more than 40 years. He announced basketball, football, volleyball and soccer, in addition to other sports.
Mizener was inducted into the Downers South Hall of Fame in 2005.
After news of Mizener's death broke, dedications poured in on Twitter.
Jim Mizener was clearly loved by all of the sports teams at DGS, but for me he was the teacher who introduced me to Architecture in 1974. Jim encouraged me to pursue a dream, and thanks to him I've spent the last 40+ years designing special places across the US! #dgspride— Jeffrey Davis (@jd4080) November 17, 2020 So saddened by the loss of "the voice of the mustangs" Mr. Jim Mizener. I will always remember "Everybody up for the kick off." He is such a big part of @DGS_Football and @DGNFootball. My thoughts are with the whole Mizener Family!— DGN Football (@CoachHoreniDGN) November 14, 2020 If we can have a fraction of the impact that Jim Mizener had on people, we have lived a full life. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Mizeners at this time. Rest In Peace Jim, your voice will be heard at South for generations! https://t.co/nY1KK1XVIt— DGS Wrestling (@DGS_Wrestling) November 15, 2020 According to Suburban Life, Mizener's wife was also hospitalized with coronavirus, but has since recovered.
