Description

Lol why was this flagged? NRBQ. New Rhythm and Blues Quartet. Anybody into them, and what they used to do? They were a band that would just roll out onto some arbitrary stage somewhere, open with a Monk piece, then play some bubblegum pop and rockabilly and then have the drummer (the incomparable Tom Ardolino) come out and front the band for Our Day Will Come or There's a Kind of Hush. Then they'd continue playing all types of songs in a variety of styles and it just seemed so organic. They were the anti Dead, in fact. Instead of 13 minute long intros and solos (nothing wrong with that when done right), NRBQ would place an improvised solo (guitar or piano/clavinet) in the middle of a song they never played before that would blow your mind. Now, I don't want to trace over what the boys have already done. That's theirs. But does anyone want to start a similar band? Our own sound, songs (original and covers) and sensibility. Play up and down the coast eventually, or at the very least, play our asses and souls off because we love to play and create something out of nothing. I'd be interested in playing everything and anything with the following exceptions: pop punk ( two words that have no biz being together), any country music that sounds like it was made after 1983 (we're not trying to sell pickup trucks here), and no faking the funk (RHCP and their ilk....why anyone would choose to listen to the Red Hots when the Ohio Players, Funkadelic, Mandrill, etc exist is beyond me). I love music. Folk, funk, pop, avant garde, bossa nova, blues, soul, punk, hip hop, indie, outty, country, oldies, newies... So we'd be an NRBQ in theory. But more modern and well, probably not as skilled because they don't make musicians like that anymore. I'm in my late forties, I play guitar (and can play a wide variety of styles and have a great ear), I can sing and I know a ton of obscure covers and I have countless originals to contribute. Looking for: Keys Bass Drums Anything Else Other writer or singers encouraged to apply. NRBQ fans get in touch as well!
