this will sound snobbish, but i don't care, i'm open to your thoughts, presented (hopefully) in a civil, thoughtful manner. this guitarist i know called himself a musician. ok, but he spent a lot of time learning simple songs, then forgot the chords a week later, and i wasted a lot of time rehearsing with him, only to go back a week later and re-rehearse the same songs. so my classification would be as follows; a musician knows some theory(not enough to get in the way of making music) can do something other than play scales fast(ooh, pentatonics), knows more than a pentatonic scale, uses dynamics and expression in his/her music, and actually makes music. then theres the guitar player, vs the guitarist; both maybe don't know any theory at all, maybe play by ear(after all, there's not a whole lot of chords in a harmonized scale) do know more than the pentatonic scale, and can sound good. can, but not always. a guitarist will always sound good, a guitar player, well....hit and miss.
then there's the guy standing on stage with a guitar hanging around his neck, and hasn't quite figured out that 'tuning up' thing.
rant is done. i'm just tired of people calling themselves 'musicians' and i pack up my gear, drive out to see them and they are somewhere between a guitar player and the guy who owns a guitar.
