Description

Join Green Building Alliance for this local case study of historic preservation. Once a bustling transit hub bringing people to the borough, the Wilkinsburg Train Station was left abandoned after Amtrak discontinued service in 1975. Falling into disrepair, the building remained unused for 50 years. Now, it has been brought back to life by the dedication of the Wilkinsburg Community Development Corporation, the determination of team members and craftsmen, and the support of the surrounding community. Join Green Building Alliance for a tour of the train station to explore this local case of historic building reuse, learn about major challenges and solutions, and discover how the space will contribute in new ways to the Wilkinsburg community. Tour guides will include representatives from the Wilkinsburg CDC, Sota Construction Services, and the Wilkinsburg Historical Society.  Leading up to this tour, catch GBA's recent episode of Green Building Bites which features Matthew Craig from the Young Preservationists of Pittsburgh as he describes the importance of allowing historic buildings to tell their stories, and draws connections between green building and historic preservation (the extended interview can be found here). You can also learn more about the train station renovation here, here, here, and here. Project team members included MCF Architecture and Sota Construction Services.  Advanced registration for this event is required, and participants will receive details about COVID protocols in advance. This tour will take place both inside and outside and all guests should plan on bringing masks. In addition to the fee for attending this event, please also consider a donation to the Wilkinsburg CDC if you would like to support their work directly. Registration for this event will close on March 21.
