March 3, 2022: PACIFIC GROVE — Pacific Grove Police Department warns of possible distemper….After community service officers have responded to an unusually high number of sick raccoons, the Pacific Grove Police Department is warning of a possible distemper outbreak in the area. In a press release, Administrative Services Manager Jocelyn Francis said the city is awaiting a toxicology report to confirm what type of virus is being spread but the symptoms are indicative of distemper. Distemper is contagious and can infect a wide range of domestic carnivores like cats and dogs as well as wild carnivores like racoons, foxes and skunks. The virus can cause respiratory, neurologic and gastrointestinal illness. Vaccinating pets against the virus not only protects them but can help limit the spread of the disease.
