Fairhope Volunteer Fire Department will be hosting Todd Edwards on March 29th for his Breaking Barriers class.
Seminar will be held at Fairhope VFD Station 2 (19875 Thompson Hall Road). There will be a 1:00 pm and 6:00 pm session. You may attend whichever one is best for you.
Breaking Barriers provides vital training to first responders on how to serve individuals with intellectual disabilities and how they can better understand the reactions and perceptions they might encounter during an emergency and break down potential barriers of service.
The course covers:
Understanding and awarenessCommunication, misconceptions, stress pointsActions of the individual with a disabilityUnderstanding how to work with these behaviors and what they mean. The training also offers key points on disabilities and the homes of those with disabilities that will help keep the first responders safe. In some geographical areas, we will also introduce participants to an individual with Down syndrome, which will allow attendees to ask questions and hear firsthand how to understand communication with people with intellectual disabilities better. We also provide essential materials to go back with the First Responder and tangible items to help them serve their communities.
