MELVILLE, NY — Amazon continues to expand its last mile warehouses on Long Island, and just signed a new ten-year lease for the former Newsday headquarters at 90 Ruland Rd. in Melville.
The Ruland Road building has 276,500 square feet and is located a mile from the former Rubie's Costume Co. property that Amazon plans to make into a "last mile" delivery center.
Last-mile warehouses are the final distribution centers for Amazon deliveries, smaller than the company's giant fulfillment centers, and an important component of Amazon's rapid delivery pace.
According to Newsday, an Amazon representative confirmed the newest deal but didn't specify how the former newspaper headquarters would be used.
Amazon has been increasing its warehouse presence on Long Island in recent years, with around ten total planned for Nassau and Suffolk counties in approximately the next year. The three that are currently up and running are in Bethpage, Carle Place and Yaphank.
The Melville warehouse could receive IDA tax breaks if 175 permanent jobs are created.
"While this prospective project is still in the early stages, we are excited about the potential to bring new jobs with great pay and benefits to the area and to continue our investment in the state of New York," Amazon's Verena Gross told Newsday.
