SOUTH FARMINGDALE, NY — A South Farmingdale "zombie home" was demolished on Wednesday morning, the Town of Oyster Bay announced. The 6 Hyman Drive home has been vacant and dilapidated for years. It was called a "longtime blight" and "eyesore" by the town. The town's Quality of Life Task Force said it heard the community's concerns. "This property has had a lack of maintenance, multiple violations, and complaints from neighbors," Supervisor Joseph Saladino said. "Over and over, Town personnel found deplorable conditions at this location with each passing inspection. This property showed clear signs of neglect, and it became more and more evident that this dwelling was falling into great disrepair." The home's code violations included overgrown vegetation, deterioration of walls and roofing, debris both indoors and outside, damaged or missing ceilings, and overall deterioration. With the property owner not fulfilling most opportunities to clean it up, the Town Quality of Life Task Force stepped in to help residents. "While the condition of this property worsened over time, the Town continued all efforts to keep the property maintained, in general acceptable appearance, and of course safe to the surrounding neighborhood," Councilman Lou Imbroto said. "The great success of our Task Force really speaks for itself, as we've now successfully demolished more than two dozen homes since its inception."
