Man Accused Of Identity Theft, Forgery: Greenwich Police

GREENWICH, CT — A 54-year-old man has been charged in connection with a financial crime investigation that began in October 2021, according to the Greenwich Police Department. George Leeper, of Queens, N.Y., was arrested on Wednesday by Greenwich authorities at the Nassau County Correctional Center on Long Island on a warrant that charged him with: Second-degree identity theft; conspiracy to commit identity theft in the second degree; criminal impersonation; conspiracy to commit criminal impersonation; second-degree forgery; conspiracy to commit forgery in the second degree; third-degree larceny; and conspiracy to commit larceny in the third degree. Leeper was extradited back to Greenwich, and was unable to post a $150,000 bond. According to an arrest report, Leeper is scheduled to appear in court March 16. Capt. Mark Zuccerella of the GPD said around 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 7, 2021, the department's Organized Retail Crime Activity team (ORCA) responded to a business on Greenwich Avenue after an employee reported suspicious activity with a male customer. Zuccerella said the man opened up a SAKS credit card using someone else's identity, and tried purchasing gift cards. The man left before police arrived. Through intelligence sharing with other agencies, analyzing security footage and other investigative means, investigators identified the man as Leeper, Zuccerella said. "This was good old fashioned police work," Zuccerella added. Leeper was in the custody of the Nassau County Police Department for another offense, and authorities there discovered in December that the GPD had a warrant on file. After the extradition process was complete, Zuccerella said, GPD officers picked Leeper up this week.
